Deliver fairness for the WASPI women- Elliott

Ulster Unionist MP Tom Elliott has repeated his call for the Government to introduce fair transitional arrangements for women affected by changes to the state pension age, known as the WASPI women.

Mr Elliott raised the issue with the Under Secretary for Work and Pensions, Richard Harrington, on Monday in the House of Commons.

The Fermanagh & South Tyrone MP said:

“While no one disagrees that men and women should be treated equally in our state pension system, the way that changes have been introduced, without appropriate notice, has left many women suffering financial hardship.

“It is a matter of fairness that transitional payments should be introduced.

“I have lobbied the Government on several occasions on this issue, and have also presented a petition to Parliament.

“On Monday I questioned the Minister on what action he was taking currently, disappointingly he replied that the Government had no plans to introduce transitional payments for the women, who have been uniquely disadvantaged.

“My Ulster Unionist colleagues and I will continue to press the Government to deliver fairness for the WASPI women.”
