Stark admission on PSNI’s capacity to investigate troubles-related crime – Beattie

  • PSNI admits it does not have resources to investigate non-fatal Troubles attacks
  • What hope does current situation offer to those affected?

Ulster Unionist Upper Bann candidate, Doug Beattie MC said:

“Recently the PSNI wrote to military veterans who had asked them to probe troubles-related attacks on them, outlining that they do not have the resources to do so. They went further to say that the Legacy Investigation Branch (LIB) does not have the resources to investigate any non-fatal troubles-related incidents.

“This is a very stark admission about the PSNI’s capacity to investigate such cases with their current resource base.  What hope does such a situation offer to anyone with life changing physical or psychological injuries because of the Troubles of seeing justice done?

“The Ulster Unionist Party has consistently argued for many years that the current processes are incomplete, imbalanced and imperfect.   The DUP promoted the current proposals for the HIU and ICIR.  It is up to them to say if they have changed their mind.

“Meanwhile families and individuals continue to suffer the anguish of not having access to a credible mechanism for acknowledgment, truth and justice.”
