Ulster Unionist MP Danny Kinahan has said we have a moral duty to look after our service personnel.
Mr Kinahan was speaking during a debate in the House of Commons on investigations into service personnel and veterans.
The South Antrim MP said:
“Whether during Operation Banner in Northern Ireland, or during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, our Armed Forces carry out their duty with the highest degree of professionalism and integrity.
“Unfortunately, too often our troops have faced baseless accusations and have been dragged through the courts unnecessarily. I welcome the recent announcement that the Iraq Historic Allegations Team is closing, and that the man who has brought most of the claims, Phil Shiner, has been struck off as a solicitor for misconduct charges, which included dishonesty and lack of integrity.
“A recent report by the Defence Sub-Committee led by Jonny Mercer MP, has outlined a potential way forward for historic allegations which must be explored.
“This is a UK wide issue, we must continue to work both at Stormont and at Westminster to find an appropriate way forward.
“No one is above the law regardless of whether they are in a uniform or not. However we have a moral duty to support our troops who often protect us in the most challenging of circumstances.”
