Ulster Unionist MP Tom Elliott has said that legacy bodies agreed in the Stormont House Agreement must be able to investigate cases that were previously examined by the Historical Enquiries Team.
Mr Elliott was speaking during a debate in the House of Commons on legacy investigations.
The Fermanagh & South Tyrone MP said:
“I remain concerned that the proposed Historical Investigations Unit, agreed by the DUP and Sinn Fein at Stormont House, will not deal with the current imbalance in addressing legacy issues, and could lead to a parallel police force investigating the past. The current political impasse makes it highly unlikely that it will be established anytime soon.
“However, if the HIU is established it is vital that it is also able to launch new investigations into cases which were previously investigated by the Historical Enquiries Team.
“Incidents such as the 1992 Teebane Bomb, where 8 innocent workmen were killed by the IRA as they returned from work, was previously reviewed by the HET, yet no one has ever been convicted for this heinous crime.
“Surely this atrocity and others like it warrant a fresh investigation, so the terrorists who carried them out can be held accountable for their crimes.
“The HIU must be able to open new investigations into incidents that have had a HET review, but proved unsatisfactory, in order to deliver truth and justice for the innocent victims and their families.”
