Ulster Unionists send condolences to family of woman killed in Lough Erne boating tragedy

Ulster Unionist Fermanagh and South MLA Rosemary Barton and MP Tom Elliott have expressed their condolences to the family of the woman who lost her life in a boating tragedy near Devenish Island in Lough Erne.

Rosemary Barton MLA said:

“My heart goes out to the family and friends of this young woman, who was taking a pleasure trip on Lough Erne over the Easter weekend.

“What should have been a happy family time has turned to tragedy. This is deeply distressing news.

“As we approach holiday season, I feel that it is important to stress to all users of the Lough that safety should always be at the forefront of our minds. While it is a wonderful and scenic spot, this incident has highlighted that it can also be very dangerous.”

Tom Elliott MP said:

“This is an absolutely tragic event which has resulted in a young woman sadly losing her life. My sympathies go to her entire family, but especially to her husband who I believe tried frantically to save her life, as well as her two children who were asleep at the time on the boat.

“This heart-breaking incident once again illustrates the danger of water. Whilst the lakes in Fermanagh are one of our best assets, they are not without their dangers. Therefore, I would urge everyone – whether tourists or accustomed locals – to remain mindful of these risks and to show caution at all times.”
