Crucial that NI has functioning Assembly & Executive

  • Politics in NI cannot continue to drift

  • NI needs strong voices at Stormont and Westminster to get best Brexit deal

Ulster Unionist Party leader, Robin Swann MLA said:

“Following today’s roundtable we are now awaiting sight of the legislation the Secretary of State has indicated he will bring forward.  This will give us an indication of the timeframe for the formation of an Executive.  There’s no denying that the talks are under added pressure now the Prime Minister has called a General Election.  But we shouldn’t allow things locally to drift further.

“At this crucial time, Northern Ireland needs a functioning Assembly and Executive.  It is already disappointing that Westminster is legislating for something as local as the regional rate.  The clear message coming from the health, education and business sectors is to get things back up and running.  We need to see local decision makers doing the job they were elected to carry out.

“As the UK gears up for Brexit negotiations it is vital that Northern Ireland has strong voices arguing for the best deal possible, both from the benches in Westminster and in the Assembly Chamber.”
