Ulster Unionist MP Danny Kinahan has said that the Government must listen to the victims of the Hyde Park bomb.
Mr Kinahan earlier chaired an event at Westminster to raise awareness of the Hyde Park Justice Campaign. The Hyde Park victims are attempting to bring a civil case against the chief suspect John Downey.
Danny Kinahan MP said:
“Today MPs and Peers from across Parliament showed solidarity with the Hyde Park victims, who 35 years on have still not received justice.
“In 2014, the families felt they were on the cusp of seeing John Downey held to account for his crimes, only for him to pull out a comfort letter sent to him by the Government which prevented him from being prosecuted in a criminal court.
“The families have bravely fought on and now want to bring civil proceedings against John Downey. I must pay tribute to Sarahjane Young and Mark Tipper for their dogged determination in seeking justice for the deaths of their loved ones.
“Disgracefully the families have twice been denied legal aid. Earlier in the House of Commons my Party colleague Tom Elliott MP challenged the Justice Minister to meet with the victims and make exceptional funds available for this case, disappointingly the Minister refused to comment on the matter.
“The families have waited far too long for justice, it is time that the Government removed the final obstacle for John Downey to be held to account.”
