Sinn Fein should consider victims of Historical Institutional Abuse

Ulster Unionist Party Leader, Robin Swann MLA, has said it is absolutely ‘imperative’ that the findings of the Historical Institutional Abuse (HIA) Inquiry are acted upon.

Mr Swann was commenting after the Inquiry’s Chairman, Sir Anthony Hart, said that implementation of the Inquiry’s findings is urgent.

Robin Swann MLA said:

“It is now almost 5 months since Sir Anthony Hart published the findings of the Inquiry which examined 73 years of abuse inflicted on the most vulnerable in our society.

“It is astounding that in that time we have had no Executive in place, to implement the much needed recommendations and recognise the plight of the victims. While Sinn Fein are putting up every excuse as to why the devolved institutions should not be up and running, they would do well to consider the victims of Historical Institutional Abuse.

“Sir Anthony Hart’s comments, that it is ‘a matter of urgency’ that his Report’s recommendations are acted upon, should be heard loud and clear by all those involved in the Stormont talks, and in particular Sinn Fein.

“In February, in the House of Commons, Tom Elliott asked the Prime Minister that if Stormont could not implement the HIA findings, then the UK Government should do so, the Prime Minister assured him that this would be the case.

“While the Ulster Unionist Party will be doing everything in our power to get the institutions up and running again, the UK Government should not hesitate to step in to deliver fairness and justice for the victims and survivors of Historical Institutional Abuse if necessary.

“It is absolutely imperative that the Inquiry’s findings are implemented, the victims should not face any further delay.”
