Futile pursuit of independent talks chair could hinder progress – Swann

  • Sinn Fein setting a precedent by posturing over UK Government role in talks
  • Public want to see institutions restored

Ulster Unionist Party Leader, Robin Swann MLA said:

“The public are clear that they want to see the Executive and Assembly back in place. Indeed, for the sake of our public services we need to see the institutions restored quickly.

“While I acknowledge that we are in relatively unchartered waters following the General Election result, the temptation to play politics should not put the future of Stormont at risk. Sinn Fein have to realise that any posturing over the UK Government’s role in the talks only sets a precedent should they themselves ever enter Government in the Republic.

“We have a few short weeks to restore devolution. Let`s not waste any more time dancing around on the head of a pin. Any futile pursuit of an independent chair will only hinder progress being made before the June 29 deadline.”
