Nesbitt delighted at new role as Vice-Chair of the Education Commitee

Strangford MLA, Mike Nesbitt, has expressed his determination to work for all the schoolchildren of the constituency in his new role as Vice-Chair of the Northern Ireland Assembly's Education Committee.

The Ulster Unionist said: "While I would have preferred this appointment to have come about under different circumstances, I am delighted to have the opportunity to join the Education Committee and try to ensure the Executive retains a focus on what matters in education, the pupils.

"For a decade now, research proves that the group most likely to underachieve at school are protestant boys from economically deprived areas. It is a stain on the reputation of the devolved government that this is the case, and I will be tireless in campaigning on their behalf. We must allow all students to explore their potential, whether it is sporting, artistic, vocational or academic.

"I have also resigned as a Governor of Campbell College with immediate effect, so that I can be seen to concentrate on offering my support to all the children of Strangford and beyond."
