Allen welcomes FIFA’s overdue decision to lift Poppy ban

The Ulster Unionist Party’s Sports Spokesperson, Andy Allen MLA, has welcomed FIFA’s decision to lift its ban on the display of poppies.

Andy Allen said:

“The news that FIFA are to amend their policy on the wearing of the poppy is long overdue but nonetheless very much welcome.

“My stance is very clear - the Poppy is not a religious or political symbol but one of freedom and sacrifice. People must have the freedom to choose to wear it, and they must also have the freedom to decide not to wear it.

“Last year we witnessed the ludicrous decision of FIFA to fine the England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland FA's for their use of the Poppy during fixtures that fell over the Armistice period, deeming the Poppy to be a political symbol.

“I welcome the fact that FIFA appear to have listened to the points raised by the four UK Associations and are now preparing to adjust their stance so that the poppy can be displayed if the opposing teams and the competition organiser for the relevant match both accept its use in advance.

“It is heartening to see an outbreak of common sense.”
