EU decision to block UK cities from 2023 Capital of Culture award “defies belief” - Nicholson

Ulster Unionist MEP Jim Nicholson has criticised the decision by the European Commission to block United Kingdom cities from being European Capital Culture. It had been agreed in 2014 that a city in the United Kingdom would become European Capital of Culture in 2023.

Mr Nicholson pointed out the good work that has already been done by Belfast and Londonderry as they have prepared their bid, and described as “spiteful” the decision of Brussels to take away that opportunity from Northern Ireland.

Mr Nicholson said:

“The European Commission’s decision to block United Kingdom cities from being European Capital of Culture in 2023 defies belief.

“Firstly, in the discourse surrounding the Brexit negotiations, much is made of the United Kingdom’s rights and obligations as an EU Member State until we leave the European Union. While we are of course negotiating our departure, we are still contributing to the EU budget and have all the rights and obligations that come with EU membership.

“Secondly, the decision for a UK city to be awarded European Capital of Culture in 2023 was taken in 2014. Since then, 5 candidates from the UK have already spent time and resources in preparing their bids. In particular, Belfast and Londonderry have done great preparatory work, showcasing Northern Ireland at its best and promoting culture as a way to unite all communities. It seems spiteful for Brussels to take away that opportunity now.

“Thirdly, it is illogical for the Commission to block UK cities from availing of this award on the basis that we will have left the European Union by 2023 - given the fact that non-EU cities such as Istanbul and Reykjavik have previously been named European Capital of Culture.

“I fear that there are some in Brussels who are trying to use the Brexit negotiations to take a swipe at the UK at any opportunity. This kind of spiteful attitude helps no-one.

“I have written to the European Commissioner for Culture on this issue, seeking urgent answers and a meeting.”
