Ulster Unionist Councillors condemn spate of robberies in wider Markethill area

Ulster Unionist Councillors, Jim Speers and Gordon Kennedy, have condemned the thugs who carried out a spate of robberies in the wider Markethill area over the last 48 hours and have asked for a meeting with police to relay the concerns of the community and ask for a robust response. The robberies took place at Retarnet Road, Redrock and just off the Newtownhamilton Road.

Councillor Jim Speers MBE said:

“Over the last 48 hours there have been at least three robberies on homes in the wider Markethill area. It is totally unacceptable that gangs are roaming around breaking into people`s houses. Valuable items have been stolen including those of great sentimental value. Not content with doing that those involved are ransacking homes, causing as much damage as possible as they go about their evil trade. People are afraid of who could be hit next. These gangs seem to be able to roam freely so it is incumbent on everyone to report suspicious activity to the PSNI.”

Councillor Gordon Kennedy said:

“These robberies are absolutely despicable. The shock it causes when you come home and find your home wrecked by these thugs, is terrible. We need to see robust action from the police on this. But the police also need help. When they do catch these morons who are a plague on our community, the courts need to demonstrate that crime doesn`t pay. I`m not so sure that that message is getting through. I will be asking for a meeting with the police to relay the concerns of my colleagues and the wider community.”
