Thoughts are with families of victims at end of Haggarty trial - Beattie

At the end of the trial of former North Belfast UVF commander Gary Haggarty, Ulster Unionist Justice Spokesperson, Doug Beattie MC, MLA, has said that his thoughts are with the families of Haggarty’s victims.

Doug Beattie said:

“The revelations and graphic details of the crimes of Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) member Gary Haggarty are both shocking and disturbing in equal measure. My immediate thoughts are how could any decent society allow this man to roam its streets ever again. Yet I am struck by the fact that this is becoming normal practice in our society and many are becoming desensitised by revelations like this.

“If we progress with the proposed legacy bodies, as outlined in the Stormont House Agreement, then graphic information like this – although in a controlled environment – will become common place. Likewise, any call for an amnesty for crimes like those perpetrated by Gary Haggarty will mean that the perpetrators of some of these vile crimes will be free to boast about their exploits.

“I am also struck by the gravity of what Haggarty has claimed as a paid Special Branch Human Intelligence Source (HUMINT). These HUMINT sources - agents, spies - whatever you wish to call them, play an important role in fighting crime and terrorism. In the case of Northern Ireland, they will have saved countless numbers of lives. However, there is a fine line to be followed and clear governance methods to be adhered too. There should be no circumstances where it is acceptable for a HUMINT source to be involved in murder.

“If in the case of Haggarty, it was known about before the act took place then it should have been stopped. Alternatively, if it was made known to the handlers after the fact, then Haggarty should have been arrested immediately. I do not adhere to the argument that for the greater good things like this are going to happen – we should advocate the law and as an elected representative I will continue to advocate for the law.

“My thoughts are with the families of those who were affected by the crimes of Haggarty.”
