Arts sector must be put on a sustainable footing – Andy Allen

Ulster Unionist Party Communities spokesperson, Andy Allen MLA, has said that any future Executive must dramatically change the way the arts are funded, and place the sector on a more sustainable footing.

Andy Allen said:

“It was heartening to see such a large and passionate arts sector lobby in Parliament Buildings yesterday.   Hearing them making such an impassioned case for the future sustainability of the arts was a striking reminder of the importance of devolved government.

“The Ulster Unionist Party is convinced that the arts play a vital role in the future of Northern Ireland.  Growing and supporting the sector will accelerate us towards being a vibrant, 21st century society.  It makes sense for business, for our health and for retaining future generations of talent.  We are currently pouring millions into transforming the Titanic Quarter into a creative industries hub, what is the point of this if our people are not the lifeblood of it?

“If we ever get back to a devolved government, the next Executive is committed to a cross-cutting, Outcomes-based Programme for Government. There is no sector that can compete with the ability of the arts to help deliver positive outcomes in education, health, justice and nearly every aspect of government.  In any future Executive we must see a dramatic change in how we invest in this vital sector.   It can no longer be the case that we rummage down the back of the sofa at the end of the financial year and throw whatever we find towards the arts.  We must place the sector on a sustainable footing and empower them to be able to take a more long-term, strategic view.

“The rest of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland clearly recognise the benefits and invest appropriately.  This is not another area where we can afford to be lagging behind our closest neighbours.”
