Coveney inter-governmental conference call a red herring - Aiken

Ulster Unionist Chief Whip Steve Aiken MLA has warned Simon Coveney not to use Northern Ireland or the Belfast Agreement for electioneering purposes in the Republic.

Steve Aiken MLA said:

“The Irish Foreign Minister`s calls for the convening of an inter-governmental conference is nothing more than a red herring. The Irish Government is trying to manoeuvre its way into having a say over how Northern Ireland is governed, trampling over the Belfast Agreement as it does so.

“If they`re not trying to subvert the Agreement they are using Brexit to pursue Irish Unity by other means. They have been repeatedly warned by my party to stop continually trying to undermine the agreement, but they`re obviously not listening so far. I`ll repeat it again, don`t use Northern Ireland or the Belfast Agreement to try and put clear green water between Fine Gael and the other parties in the Republic in advance of an election.”
