Chambers condemns intimidation of Police officer’s family in Londonderry

Ulster Unionist Policing Spokesperson Alan Chambers MLA has described the latest in a spate of attacks on the home of a police officer’s parents in Londonderry, as the work of cowards following a fascist agenda.

Alan Chambers MLA said:

“I utterly condemn the latest cowardly attack on the home of a police officer’s parents in the Shantallow area of Londonderry.

“This house has been targeted on a number of occasions since 2009 and such actions are nothing less than fascism.

“The people of Shantallow are as entitled to a comprehensive police service as any other community in Northern Ireland. Attacks such as this are designed to intimidate other young people in the area from coming forward and joining the PSNI. This is a cynical attempt to prevent Catholics from joining the police and it must be resisted.

“If anyone in Shantallow – or anywhere else for that matter - has a problem with how the area is policed, then they should raise their concerns with local politicians, the District Policing Partnership, community leaders or clergy. They could even stand for election themselves and seek community support.

“Instead, this individual or group has chosen to sneak around under cover of darkness and attack the home of a police officer’s parents, causing distress and annoyance to both the family and their neighbours. This is the actions of cowards and in complete contrast to the bravery of those who put on a uniform and set out every day to protect and serve the entire community.

“I urge everyone right across Northern Ireland to give full support to the police, and to help the police close down the criminals and gangsters who are a blight on society and have nothing positive to offer anyone. They are destroying communities and must be put out of business once and for all.”
