Poll results confirm that test for border poll has not been met – Swann

Ulster Unionist Party Leader, Robin Swann MLA, has stated the results of the polls carried out as part of a Queen`s University report confirm that the test for calling a border poll has not been met.

Robin Swann MLA, said:

“I welcome the results of the two polls which formed part of a Queen`s University report which indicate that the United Kingdom is still very firmly the option of choice for a majority of people in Northern Ireland. Despite the scaremongering and rhetoric from Sinn Fein, there has been no radical change in support for a United Ireland. It backs up the results of previous polls which further confirm that the test for calling a border poll, as set out in the Belfast Agreement, has not been met. It`s now time for Sinn Fein to get back to work rather than abdicating their political responsibilities.

“The Union is secure and I am convinced it can and will grow stronger. However, this is not a time for Unionism to be complacent. Instead it is our responsibility to strengthen the Union through a New Unionism which shows tolerance and respect through word and deed and which stands in direct contrast to the contempt and disrespect shown in Sinn Fein vision`s for the future, as recently at the weekend. It is clear that despite the new faces at the helm, Sinn Fein are devoid of any new thinking.

“Unionism can be a home for all religions and none. The only thing I ask is that you are committed to strengthening the Union between Great Britain and Northern Ireland and building a better society for everyone.

“Unionism has nothing to fear from reaching out with confidence. And to those who are fearful about the future and the uncertainties around Brexit, I ask you to work with us to make Northern Ireland a better place for your family and mine. This is my home and I want to see it prosper for the benefit of my children and generations to come.”
