Ulster Unionist leader, Robin Swann MLA, has stated that Jeremy Corbyn could not be trusted with the maintenance, integrity and security of the United Kingdom if he became Prime Minister.
Mr Swann said:
“Jeremy Corbyn simply can’t be trusted on the Union. The fact that he has stated that he would take a neutral position on a border poll if a Labour Government was elected under him as Prime Minister shows that the maintenance, integrity and security of the United Kingdom mean little to him.
“People in Northern Ireland who cherish the Union would become second class citizens under a Corbyn government. It would be a betrayal of unionists right across our Nation, and I would include many Labour Party members amongst those unionists who will feel let down by Mr Corbyn once again. They will be disappointed but not surprised given Mr Corbyn’s past.
“All shades of unionism from across the political spectrum came together to campaign to keep Scotland as part of the United Kingdom yet Mr Corbyn is now taking the Labour Party in a completely different direction when it comes to Northern Ireland and I suspect his approach in Scotland would be the same. It’s sad that the Leader of Her Majesty’s Official Opposition cares so little for this part of the United Kingdom and undermines it at every opportunity.
“I look forward to continuing engagement with unionists across the United Kingdom including those in the Labour Party whose views Mr Corbyn does not represent.”
