If Barnier wants to “de-dramatise” backstop he should focus on finding pragmatic solutions – Jim Nicholson MEP

Ulster Unionist MEP Jim Nicholson has said that if Michel Barnier wants to de-dramatise the backstop option then he should focus on finding a pragmatic solution to the Irish border post-Brexit.

Jim Nicholson MEP said:

“If Mr Barnier wants to de-dramatise the backstop then perhaps he should reconsider his own approach to these negotiations.   The constant rejection of the United Kingdom Government’s proposals on solutions to the Irish border problem and the amount of focus placed on the backstop has heightened tension around it.

“Ultimately it is in the interest of all parties for a pragmatic solution to be found.  We have been very clear, as has the UK Government, that the backstop is totally unacceptable to us as unionists.  Mr Barnier cannot simply waltz around this.”
