Swann has spoken to the Secretary of State seeking clarification of Government No Deal Brexit paper

Ulster Unionist Party Leader Robin Swann MLA has spoken to the Secretary of State Karen Bradley following the publication of the Government’s guidance on preparing for a ‘no deal’ Brexit.

Mr Swann was particularly concerned at a section which appeared in the guidance relating to trade, which included a passage that referred specifically to Northern Ireland and cross border trade.

Robin Swann MLA said:

“In the document entitled ‘Trading with the EU if there’s no Brexit deal’ I noticed a section headed ‘Businesses in Northern Ireland importing and exporting to Ireland’ which included the following;

'The Irish government have indicated they would need to discuss arrangements in the event of no deal with the European Commission and EU member states. We would recommend that, if you trade across the land border, you should consider whether you will need advice from the Irish government about preparations you need to take.’

“I have raised the issue with the Secretary of State to seek clarification, because this is of absolutely key importance to Northern Ireland plc, given the significance of cross border trade to the Northern Ireland economy.

“As Unionists we have always been acutely aware of the economic importance of access to the UK’s internal market, but we also recognise and welcome the extent of cross border trade with the Republic of Ireland. As we approach the endgame in terms of Brexit negotiations, it is essential that as much clarity and certainty as possible are reached with regard to trade between Northern Ireland and the Republic.

“In the absence of any local Ministers at Stormont I have urged the Secretary of State to ensure that message is conveyed to those in London who are at the heart of the Brexit negotiations.”
