Nicholson calls on French authorities to do everything possible to prevent further attacks on UK scallop fishermen

Ulster Unionist MEP Jim Nicholson has called on the French authorities to do everything possible to prevent further attacks on British scallop fishermen in the Bay of Seine and for a Royal Navy presence in the area to help ensure crew safety.

Jim Nicholson MEP said:

“The French authorities have a responsibility to ensure that British fishermen, who are legally entitled to fish for scallops in the Bay of Seine, are able to do so without fear of being intimidated or attacked by their French counterparts.

“The irresponsible and dangerous actions of some French fishermen have caused damage to vessels and risked causing serious injury to members of the British and indeed French crews involved in the incidents.

“The French authorities must now do everything possible to ensure that there are no further attacks.

“I do hope that talks between the UK and French governments will reduce tensions and that common-sense prevails. However, given the accounts of the British fishermen who have been caught up in the clashes and the apparent unwillingness of the French authorities to adequately police the waters, it is clear that a Royal Navy presence is needed in the area to help ensure the safety of our fishermen.”
