Nicholson welcomes EU funding but warns against scaremongering

Ulster Unionist MEP Jim Nicholson has welcomed recognition from the European Parliament of the contribution made by EU funds to economic development and peacebuilding locally.

However, speaking after a European Parliament report on the issue was passed by MEPs, Mr Nicholson also warned against the use of language that implies peace would be under threat if these funds were not renewed.

Jim Nicholson MEP said:

“Two decades on from the Belfast Agreement, Northern Ireland has been transformed economically and socially, and there is no doubt that European support has played an important role in terms of economic development and social cohesion.

“I welcome the fact that the European Parliament has recognised the contribution various EU funds have made to Northern Ireland - from infrastructure and tourism investment, to supporting initiatives which help to increase skills and reduce economic inactivity, to the PEACE programme.

“Since the referendum we have been clear that we do not want this kind of support to be disrupted or diminished as a result of Brexit, with appropriate democratic oversight on a Northern Ireland and UK-wide basis.

“EU support has complemented the increased political, security and diplomatic normalisation of Northern Ireland. That is a major achievement which the EU should be proud of. However, I was disappointed with some language in the report that implied the peace process would be at risk if these funds did not continue. That to me is over simplistic at best, and at worst risks giving succour to those who seek to justify terrorist acts.”
