#UUP18 Conference Speech by Cllr Hazel Legge

I was elected to Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council in May 2014.  As a new councillor the initial months were overwhelming but here we are!  I can hardly believe that we are preparing for the next Local Government elections and reflecting on how far we have come since then.

I have played my part on all Council Committees – with the exception of Planning – and spoken on many issues.  I initiated a debate which led to the relocation of the La Mon and Innocent Victims windows and memorial bench from Bradford Court in Castlereagh to the Lisburn Civic Centre and also proposed the introduction of the JAM (Just A Minute) card aimed at assisting young people with learning difficulties and now adults with Dementia etc to get the help – or time – they need to be understood using public services.

I was also humbled to propose a Notice of Motion inspired by my friend and colleague Cllr Julie Flaherty on the introduction of the Children’s Funeral Fund which has now been in operation in LCCC since 1 September 2018.

On a personal note I am honoured that my colleagues put their faith in nominating me as LCCC’s first female Deputy Mayor for the year 2017/18 – a role which I enjoyed immensely undertaking approximately 150 engagements.  During my year I did a lot of work with young girls and Women’s groups, leading on the council’s International Women’s Day events and also establishing a Female Elected Members Steering Group which will initially lead on projects during this year marking the Centenary of some women receiving the vote.  Even 100 years on there is still so much to do!

So, what do I want to achieve next?  Well, obviously I want to get re-elected and I hope that the work I have put in over the past 4 years for the benefit of my Electoral Area and beyond will stand me in good stead to achieve this.
