Ulster Unionist Peers Lord Rogan and Lord Empey have raised concerns over the announcement from Bombardier that they propose to make 490 workers redundant, during a Ministerial statement in the House of Lords today.
Lord Rogan said:
“There were widespread concerns expressed on all sides in the House of Lords over the proposal and I asked the Government to make more R&D funds available to help protect the viability of the company in the future.”
Lord Empey said:
“I expressed my deep frustration at the lack of an Executive in Belfast which leaves a huge gap in the public sector response. With Bombardier having plants in different parts of the UK and its supply chain right across the country there is a risk of an uncoordinated approach. Belfast has widespread responsibilities for industry and employment matters, as well as redundancy payments, whereas London has wider UK responsibilities. I am therefore worried that important matters could fall through the cracks.”
