Empey demands action for Historical Institutional Abuse victims

Today at Question time in the House of Lords, Ulster Unionist Peer Lord Empey raised the issue of the Hart Inquiry Report into Historical Institutional Abuse, for the second time in less than a week.

Lord Empey said:

“A question had been asked about progress of the Independent Inquiry into child sexual abuse in England and Wales which was set up in 2014 following the Jimmy Savile scandal in 2012.

“This body, IICSA, has produced an interim report and Members were asking what progress was being made.

“I took the opportunity to point out that the Hart Inquiry had reported years ago, had recommended compensation be paid to victims, and the Report had unanimous support from Northern Ireland's political parties.

“I further pointed out that people were being let down because of the failure to implement the Report, and I called on the Home Office Minister, Baroness Williams of Trafford, to draw this matter to the attention of the Secretary of State Karen Bradley MP, to bring an end to the suffering of these victims.

“It is outrageous that the political impasse in Belfast is being used as a means of failing to take action on the Hart Report. It is now a serious matter of a fundamental breach of the Rights of the Victims and our political stalemate is no excuse for inaction. Its inhuman.”
