UUP Culture, Arts and Leisure spokesperson Robin Swann has said that the forthcoming centenary celebrations in Northern Ireland should be inclusive and not used as an attempt to rewrite history.
Robin said:
“Over the next ten years Northern Ireland will celebrate the centenaries of some of the most pivotal moments in our history. Given that the first celebration takes place in September the debate in the Assembly today was a timely one.’
“The centenaries hold great significance to many people in Northern Ireland. Indeed many of the events that took place during that decade are a fundamental part of the Ulster Unionist Party’s architecture.’
“The role played by our former leaders, Sir Edward Carson and Lord Craigavon in events such as the Ulster Covenant and the formation of Northern Ireland is something that the Ulster Unionist Party is immensely proud of.’
“The next ten years provide us with a unique opportunity to create a better understanding about our shared history and there can be many positive outcomes from these celebrations. However, my Party and I, like many others have concerns that these centenaries will be hijacked for those who wish to rewrite history and use them for petty gain.’
