Nicholson meets Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay and Minister for the Cabinet Office David Lidington

Ulster Unionist MEP, Jim Nicholson met today with Minister for the Cabinet Office, David Lidington, and Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay, stressing to them that the current backstop proposal is unacceptable and that binding changes would be required.

Speaking after meeting in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Mr Nicholson said:

"It was a very open and useful engagement with Mr Lidington and Mr Barclay, in which I highlighted my concerns.

"The current backstop proposal directly contradicts the principle of consent, enshrined in the 1998 Belfast Agreement. Northern Ireland`s position as an integral part of the United Kingdom, is not up for debate.

"Any no deal Brexit scenario would be hugely harmful to Northern Ireland, especially for our Agri-food industry and manufacturing sector. I explained to the Government Ministers that the lack of an Assembly is leaving Northern Ireland politically rudderless at a time when more than ever, Northern Ireland needs political direction.

"I will continue to engage with our Government, and speak up for Northern Ireland as we move closer to the 29th March."
