Kennedy supports child cyber safety initiative

The Ulster Unionist prospective candidate for the Botanic DEA on Belfast City Council, Richard Kennedy has voiced support for the Belfast Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) 'Cyber Safety and Talking About Consent' initiative.

The Cyber Safety initiative will facilitate the development of specific training and information sessions for use with schools, youth groups and community groups. The project aims to improve the level of awareness, knowledge and understanding of staying safe online and appropriate behaviours across a cyber-platform. Suitable for all groups, these sessions will help people take the correct steps to stay safe online, including how to use privacy settings, create safe passwords, bank and spend your money safely, avoid scams and report online issues.

Mr Kennedy said:

“I welcome this PCSP initiative to help young people navigate the challenges presented by their engagement online, which can be complicated and confusing. 'Talking About Consent' will be targeted at youth groups and schools and aims to increase young people’s understanding of sexual consent. I encourage participation, as it increases confidence in talking about consent and to know what to do in different situations.

“This is an important initiative to empower young people to confidently assert their rights about personal space and safety. I hope that the project will be embraced by parents and the wider community. If any group, school, community or voluntary organisation wishes to take advantage of the project, please register your interest by emailing PCSP@belfastcity.gov.uk.”
