Ulster Unionists do not support a Second Referendum - Swann

The Ulster Unionist Party Leader, Robin Swann MLA, has stated his Party’s opposition to a second referendum.

Mr Swann said:

“The Ulster Unionist Party would not support a second referendum on membership of the European Union.

“Firstly, it would only lead to chaos and political paralysis which would be hugely destabilising in terms of National politics and would do nothing to help promote the stability which Northern Ireland so badly needs.

“Secondly, it sets a dangerous precedent and creates the impression that you are not bound by a democratic vote which you disagree with, and that you are entitled to demand a re-run until you get the result you want.

“Thirdly, it would disrespect the original vote.

“All efforts should be focused on securing a deal between the UK and the EU that honours the referendum result and which does not include the backstop which undermines the Belfast Agreement and the principle of consent.”
