MPs haven`t grasped serious effect that drastic reduction in RHI payments will have on businesses and families – Swann

Ulster Unionist Leader, Robin Swann MLA, has stated that whilst DUP MPs highlighted difficulties faced by constituents in the House of Commons today, they failed to acknowledge or apologise for the role played by their party in the RHI scandal.

Mr Swann said:

“Having listened to the debate in Westminster on the future of RHI payments I am disappointed to say that I don't believe that many MPs have fully grasped the serious effect this will have on many Northern Ireland businesses and families, both financially and in the effect it will have on their mental wellbeing.

“This reduction was a step too far. There were steps taken in January 2017 to reduce payments, but what is missing is a thorough inspection process which would remove fraudulent usage.

“I heard several DUP MPs rightly highlight the severe difficulties that this reduction will place their constituents in, but what I didn't hear was any acknowledgement or apology as to the part their Party played in drawing these people into this scheme initially on a false premise and assurance in a letter from Arlene Foster giving guaranteed 'grandfathered' payments.

“The Ulster Unionist Party was supportive of the amendment that would see the RHI payments debated and decided on separately from the regional rate increase, as we want to see legitimate applicants treated with fairness, openness and transparency.

“This debacle has caused a serious breakdown in trust of any new renewable or environmentally friendly scheme that may come forward in the future, never mind the breakdown in trust in politicians and their promises.”
