Ulster Unionist Party Leader, Robin Swann MLA, has stated the Prime Minister`s successor should have an absolute commitment to the maintenance of the Union and the prosperity of all its people.
Robin Swann MLA said:
“I always found the Prime Minister to be courteous in all her dealings with me and cannot help but empathise with her on her premiership having ended in this way. I wish her well for the future whatever that may be. There can be no doubt that she did indeed love her country and was committed to the Union. Her dedication in the public service of the United Kingdom was unquestionable.
“However the political reality is that the bind in which her government found itself was of its own making. A change of Conservative Party Leader will not necessarily solve the problem unless there is a change in approach. The backstop is the problem that needs dealt with and it ultimately broke Theresa May`s premiership.
“The country is deeply divided and the Prime Minister`s successor will have to seek to heal those divisions whilst delivering a Brexit which maintains the economic and constitutional integrity of the United Kingdom. The new Prime Minister should have all four corners of our nation at the forefront of their thinking when they are making defining decisions about the future direction of the United Kingdom. They should have an absolute commitment to the maintenance of the Union and the prosperity of all its people.”
