Is drip-feed of unworkable Brexit proposals intended to condition us? - Aiken

Ulster Unionist Brexit spokesperson, Steve Aiken OBE MLA, has said that Northern Ireland will not accept the current Withdrawal Agreement and backstop served up cold.

Steve Aiken OBE MLA said:

“The drip-feed of unworkable proposals over the last number of days doesn’t fill me with confidence that the UK Government are working towards a deal that can pass through Parliament to secure an orderly departure from the European Union.  One would wonder whether we are being are being conditioned to accept a repackaged backstop.

“The Ulster Unionist Party has put forward detailed proposals that use the Belfast Agreement as the roadmap to securing a deal that means there are no new borders created either on the island of Ireland or between Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom.

“In short, the UK Government needs to get its finger out.  They have been told since it appeared in December 2017 that the current Withdrawal Agreement and backstop are unacceptable.  That can’t be wished away.  After weeks of building up the prospect of putting forward a workable set of alternative proposals, the Prime Minister should be under no illusions.  Northern Ireland will not accept the current deal served up cold.”
