Current Brexit deal a total betrayal of the people of NI – Swann

Ulster Unionist Party Leader Robin Swann MLA has said that Northern Ireland sits on the brink of a no deal disaster while the UK Government plays “he said, she said”.

Robin Swann MLA said:

“It is another week where politicians in the EU and our own Government are treating Northern Ireland like a chess piece in a very high risk game.  We sit on the brink of economic disaster for Northern Ireland as we edge closer to no deal, yet the UK Government is more interested in a game of “he said, she said” than producing a viable alternative.

“Northern Ireland forever remaining in the backstop which is still being proposed by the EU is as intolerable to unionists today as it was when it first appeared in 2017.  The DUP and Boris Johnson’s proposal that puts a border up the Irish Sea is no better.  We cannot and will not support any proposal that pawns our economic and constitutional links with the rest of the United Kingdom.  Anyone who thinks that Northern Ireland can be used as leverage in these negotiations is barking up the wrong tree.

“What is currently on the table amounts to a total betrayal of the people of Northern Ireland and a shredding of the Belfast Agreement.  The DUP have done untold damage by surrendering the principle of the constitutional and economic integrity of the United Kingdom.”
