Aiken challenges DUP to withdraw support for regulatory border in the Irish Sea

Ulster Unionist Leader, Steve Aiken OBE MLA, has challenged Sir Jeffrey Donaldson and his colleagues to withdraw their support for a regulatory border in the Irish Sea following comments he made on BBC Radio 4`s Today Programme.

Mr Aiken said:

“Sir Jeffrey Donaldson`s comments on BBC Radio 4 demonstrate an incredible lack of self-awareness. He stated, ‘we believe the Prime Minister needs to look again at this idea of creating a border in the Irish Sea.’

“It was the DUP which put this idea on the table. Sir Jeffery Donaldson should be putting the same line of questioning to himself and his DUP colleagues because it was they who agreed to a regulatory border in the Irish Sea on 2 October. They are as complicit in this as Boris Johnson.

“Sir Jeffrey and his colleagues are either deliberately ignoring the facts or oblivious to the consequences of their own foolhardy actions and the impact that they would have when they foolishly capitulated on the principle of a border in the Irish Sea. Unfortunately Northern Ireland will be left paying the cost of DUP influence in Westminster.”
