Beggs asks Minister to seek temporary MOT exemptions for drivers

Roy Beggs, Ulster Unionist MLA for East Antrim, has written to the Minister for Infrastructure, Nichola Mallon MLA, asking her to seek the issue of temporary MOT exemptions following the detection of cracks in vehicle lifts at MOT centres which is forcing many drivers off the road.

Roy Beggs said:

“I have written to the Minister for Infrastructure urging that temporary MOT exemptions are issued for vehicles which have been prepared and presented for testing so that citizens are not penalised because of a failure of DVA equipment.

“It is also important the MOT waiting lists are kept as short as possible.  That is why I have called on all remaining operational MOT lanes to be put onto a shift system so that as many vehicles as possible can receive their test certificate.  Otherwise the public will face considerable inconvenience and extended waits for MOT testing.

“There is also a need to quickly replace or repair the faulty equipment to return MOT testing to full capacity.  Any contractual obligation must be urgently enacted and the reason why faulty pieces of equipment are only now coming to light needs to be established.”
