University of Liverpool survey confirms majority support for the Union - Aiken

Ulster Unionist Leader, Steve Aiken OBE MLA, has stated that although the University of Liverpool survey confirms that there is majority support for the Union in Northern Ireland, there can`t be any room for Unionists to rest on their laurels.

Mr Aiken said:

“The results of the survey carried out by the University of Liverpool confirm that there is no evidence to support the Secretary of State calling a border poll in the near future. Rather, they contradict Sinn Fein claims, made on the back of their election euphoria in the Republic, that the conditions have been met for a poll.

“Sinn Fein should stop attempting to twist and contort the Belfast Agreement for selfish party political interests and instead concentrate on the real issues facing all the people of Northern Ireland.

“However the results of the survey should also be a wake-up call to all shades of unionism. The results do indeed confirm that the majority of people want Northern Ireland to remain part of the United Kingdom, but we need to grow that majority. We need to actively engage with all sections of Northern Ireland`s community to demonstrate that the Union is for everyone irrespective of your religion, sexual orientation or ethnic origin. Economically, socially and culturally we are better together as one United Kingdom.”
