Ulster Unionist Leader, Steve Aiken OBE MLA, has met with William Shawcross the Foreign Secretary’s Special Representative on UK Victims of Libyan-Sponsored IRA Terrorism to discuss how IRA victims might be compensated.
Mr Aiken said:
“Today I took the opportunity to meet with the Foreign Secretary’s Special Representative on UK Victims of Libyan-Sponsored IRA Terrorism.
“I was keen to hear at first-hand how he plans to proceed in a bid to compensate those who were killed or injured by weaponry exclusively supplied by Libya’s Gadaffi regime.
“It is a matter of record that successive UK Governments have failed to stand up for the interests of their citizens and achieve the type of compensation that has been achieved by the US, German and French Governments.
“Lord Empey has been relentlessly pursuing this matter at Westminster via a Private Member’s Bill. He is very active within the Parliamentary Support Group and I applaud his efforts.
“Today along with my colleague Doug Beattie MC, I took the opportunity to impress upon the Foreign Secretary’s Special Representative of the need to do the right thing and take meaningful and decisive action to help the innocent victims of Gadaffi and the IRA.
“It is long past time that a British Government finally stepped up to the mark.”
