Coveney needs to resist inflammatory language as EU/UK talks begin – Aiken

Ulster Unionist Party Leader Steve Aiken OBE MLA has said that Simon Coveney should be well aware of how offensive it is to unionists to talk of infrastructure between Northern Ireland and Great Britain.

Steve Aiken said:

“This is yet another case of Simon Coveney inflaming a situation where we should be seeking to find common purpose.  He should by now be well aware that his numerous utterances on Brexit have been deemed to be offensive by many in the unionist community.  He more than anyone else should be aware of how utterly offensive it is to unionists in Northern Ireland to have infrastructure imposed between ourselves and the rest of our nation yet he is out today acting the hardman over future trade deals.

“The next round of talks between the European Union and the UK will go a lot more smoothly if the Irish Foreign Minister can resist the inflammatory language.  We have spent the last three years being lectured by the Irish Government over how damaging infrastructure on the island of Ireland would be, yet they don’t seem to have an ounce of generosity when it comes to the Irish Sea.”
