Nesbitt objects to £500 per day remuneration for Bill of Rights Committee panel of experts

Mike Nesbitt MLA, Vice-Chair of the ad-hoc Committee on a Bill of Rights, has objected to five experts who will advise the Committee receiving a fee of £500 per day.

Mike Nesbitt MLA said:

“I totally object to the panel of five experts being paid £500 a day to advise the ad-hoc Committee on a Bill of Rights.  It does nothing but damage to public confidence and patience with politics to see more money being spent on another Committee.

“The Commission for Flags, Identity, Culture and Tradition has already run up astronomical amounts and it has showed no results yet.  We cannot afford to make the same mistake again.

“This is a commitment in New Decade, New Approach as was a Brexit sub-Committee – but in that case the Executive decided they would form the committee.  I see no justification for why we need a panel of five or the need for £500 a day, particularly when we have no shortage of experts coming forward to voluntarily offer advice.

“The Bill of Rights is something that has been discussed in Northern Ireland for over twenty years and there is no guarantee that this Committee is going to be able to offer any resolution.”
