Kennedy concerned for HET's future

Ulster Unionist MLA, Danny Kennedy has expressed his concerns about the future of the Historical Enquiries Team given the gaps that exist within the PSNI budget.

Kennedy said:

“The Chief Constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland, Matt Baggott, has recently outlined a substantial hole in the policing budget equating to £25million.  This is obviously of great concern as it raises questions about the future of security in Northern Ireland.’

“It is important that we receive assurances around the work of the Historical Enquiries Team.  The funding for the HET runs out during 2012-2013 and the operation of this body costs £6million a year.’

“They are currently working their way through the unsolved murders of the troubles and there are many families who are waiting for the truth to be uncovered about their loved ones deaths.’

“Any reductions in the HET budget will primarily affect administration staff, depleting the numbers and quality of the Team.  We will also see many reports into atrocities, such as the Enniskillen bomb, delayed or postponed.  This news will be of great concern to the families who will be affected.’

“I will be meeting with the Chief Constable in Washington next week where I will raise these matters with him directly.  I will also be working closely with my Ulster Unionist colleague and Policing Board member, Ross Hussey to seek to find a positive resolution which ensures the HET can carry on their work.’
