There are no excuses left, the Victims’ Payment Scheme must be put in place – Beattie

Following the publication of guidance for the Victims’ Payment Scheme, UUP MLA and The Executive Office Committee Vice-Chair Doug Beattie MC MLA said:

“The primary purpose of the Victims Payment Scheme was to provide for those who suffered life changing injuries through no fault of their own during the Troubles. The advice given by the Secretary of State, in the guidance to the Judge-led panel, is clear on this point.

“Shamefully, the twisting and turning to prevent this payment from being made has led us far away from that principle.  It has led to delays in implementing the scheme based around money and eligibility while victims are left hurt and frustrated.

“The legislation, passed at Westminster, is clear on both these points and now the guidance confirms what is already in law.

“There are no excuses left.  It is up to The Executive Office to get on with nominating a lead Department that can put the scheme in place.  Those who have been promised this payment should not have to wait another day longer.

“Sinn Fein have danced on the head of a pin for long enough.  There is no ambiguity left for them to hide behind.  The guidance has been issued, failure to implement the scheme is a failure to support victims, they need to get on with it.”
