Kinahan warns on the dangers of not maintaining peatlands

Danny Kinahan MLA today hosted the Commission of Inquiry on Peatlands at Stormont.

Speaking after the event the UUP Environment spokesperson said:

“Our peatlands are a vital resource in the fight against increasing global warming.  Indeed in the United Kingdom they are the most important carbon store.  This is why it is vital to maintain and protect them.’

“I would call on the Minister to set up an all-inclusive action group, consisting of farmer, users, environmental groups and academics, who can work towards a long term plan for preserving Northern Ireland’s peatlands.’

“It is also important to consider that by not maintaining our peatlands, we could be heading towards another infraction under the EU Habitats Directive, so we must make sure that the European Directive is followed properly.’
