McCallister calls for greater provision for couples receiving IVF treatment

UUP Health spokesperson, John McCallister has called on the Health Minister to strive to provide greater provision for couple receiving IVF treatment.

John said:

“Many of us will know people who have been affected by infertility and who have been through the IVF process. We will have witnessed first-hand the heartache and disappointment it has led to for some, and the joy it has brought to others.’

“I and my Party believe that there must be improved provision for families who are going through the IVF process and post treatment.  It is important that there is counseling support for families and couples.’

“It is vital that, where possible, we follow the NICE guidelines. Too often, we look at the NICE guidelines and then decide how we can follow them in the cheapest way to deliver the service that is required.  We should not penalise people by giving them a lesser service that they can expect in other parts of the UK. We should strive to deliver the same standards.’

“Statistics show that the chances of conception improve if couples can undertake the recommended three cycles of IVF. This is something that I would call on the Health Minister to strive to deliver.’

“We must also ensure that any new advances or practices are quickly adopted here and used to deliver the best outcomes for couples. It is all about getting a good result for couples — the birth of a healthy baby — and about supporting them on the journey through the treatment.’

Huge disappointments and setbacks can befall couples who go through the treatment, and it can be a very challenging time. However, the hope is that, with a family at the end of it, the process is worthwhile.’
