Beattie welcomes latest development in connection with Birmingham bombings

The Ulster Unionist Party’s Justice Spokesperson, Doug Beattie MC MLA, has welcomed the news that a suspect has been arrested in Belfast in connection with the 1974 Birmingham pub bombings.

Doug Beattie MC MLA said:

“The Birmingham pub bombings in 1974 were a horrific crime, even by the IRA’s gruesome standards. 21 people were murdered and many more were dreadfully injured as people on a night out were targeted in busy city centre pubs.

“The news that someone has been arrested in Belfast today is proof that even 46 years after the event, the investigation is ongoing, and suspects are being sought as part of due process.

“The Ulster Unionist Party has always supported the rule of law and believes that if the evidence exists or comes to light, then anyone who has committed a crime should face prosecution, no matter who they are. That is why we have resolutely opposed the introduction of an amnesty for Troubles related crimes.

“I note that the families of the Birmingham bomb victims – who have campaigned tirelessly so that their loved ones are not forgotten – have welcomed this latest development.

“The law must now be allowed to take its course.”
