Kinahan Raises Concerns with Funding for Ethnic Minorities

Ulster Unionist Danny Kinahan has expressed his concerns around funding from the Office of the First and deputy First Minister for ethnic minorities in Northern Ireland.

The South Antrim MLA commented:

‘It is vital that we support ethnic minorities throughout Northern Ireland in an effective manner as it is sometimes the case that they face very specific challenges, such as racism or gaining equal opportunities in employment. It is my belief and that of the Ulster Unionist Party that the rights of ethnic minorities should be positively advanced.’

‘Organisations such as the Northern Ireland Council for Ethnic Minorities (NICEM) undertake very important work in promoting good relations and creating opportunities for ethnic minorities. They are also fundamental in raising awareness and understanding of issues affecting ethnic minorities. However in order to continue this work funding is obviously a necessity.’

‘I asked an urgent written question to the First and deputy First Minister regarding the action which is being taken to ensure that minority ethnic communities will receive after 31st March and what interim funding will be available should there be a delay. I am very concerned that this question remains unanswered and the uncertainty which is facing organisations such as NICEM is not conducive to meeting their aims and objectives.’

‘I would call on the First and deputy First Minister to clarify the funding position for ethnic minorities, particularly NICEM, and to ensure that sufficient support is afforded to them.’
