Overend calls for republican flags to be removed in Bellaghy

Ulster Unionist Assembly Member for Mid-Ulster, Sandra Overend has
expressed her disgust at Republicans erecting flags throughout the
village of Bellaghy over the weekend.

Sandra said,

“Given that the village of Bellaghy has a mixed community, it is my
belief that all sections should be able to live in peace with their
neighbours.  There is a largely cordial relationship in the community,
but it obvious that there is still an unsavoury element of intolerant
people who cannot move on.’

“I am disgusted that the village has been decorated in such an
intimidating manner over the weekend, with flags being erected on
almost every lamppost in the village.   They serve only to make the
minority community feel uncomfortable in their homes and are an
attempt to drive a wedge between people in the area.’

“I am appalled that such divisive behaviour continues while we try to
build a shared future for Northern Ireland.  Martin McGuinness, MP and
MLA for this constituency talks about the need to build a shared
future for the people of Northern Ireland, but for many living in
Bellaghy there’s nothing shared about the village at the moment.’
