Wilson’s latest cheap headline grabbing remarks are an insult to all health service workers - Aiken

The Ulster Unionist Party Leader Steve Aiken OBE MLA has responded to the latest attempt by the DUP’s Sammy Wilson to undermine the Health Minister and the Chief Medical Officer.

Steve Aiken said:

“Today we have witnessed what can only be described as puerile remarks from Sammy Wilson MP about our Health Minister and the Chief Medical Officer.

“Whilst the rest of the country knows full well how much it owes our medical professionals in our NHS, Sammy Wilson has spent the pandemic showing his contempt for them, by flouting guidelines and rejecting expert advice. Today he has somehow managed to plumb new depths in his efforts to attract attention and play the class clown. Our NHS staff deserve praise and support not insults.

“His comments in relation to the Health Minister and the Chief Medical Officer fall well short of the leadership the people of East Antrim are entitled to expect from their Member of Parliament.  He should reconsider his ill-advised comments and show some contrition and appreciation for the work being done to protect the public, rather than pushing for cheap headlines and acting the fool.

“It is at times like this that we should all be grateful for the fact that the DUP did not take the Health Ministry, because medical professionals might have had to take Sammy Wilson’s dangerous rantings seriously, whereas at least now they are treated with the contempt they deserve.”
