Stewart welcomes £98 million MOD Missile contract for Belfast

Ulster Unionist Economy Spokesperson John Stewart MLA has welcomed news that the Belfast firm Thales is to benefit from a £98 million contract extension from the Ministry of Defence (MOD), securing over 100 highly skilled jobs in the process.

John Stewart MLA said:

“I warmly welcome the announcement that a major MOD contract is going to be extended in Belfast. Given the current uncertain economic situation, Northern Ireland needs to retain and protect what remains of our manufacturing base.  This is over 100 highly skilled manufacturing jobs that are staying in Belfast, which is obviously good news for the Thales workforce and its substantial supply chain.

“Northern Ireland has a long and proud history of delivering Defence contracts and the Short-Range Air Defence (SHORAD) project is continuing a well-worn path. This project involves a variety of missile options that can intercept air threats including fast jets, attack helicopters and unmanned air systems in a matter of seconds. The contract extension will see Northern Ireland continue to play its part in the defence of our Nation and its military assets.”
