Elliott disappointed as Kenny’s continued campaign re Finucane

Ulster Unionist Assembly Member Tom Elliott has expressed his disappointment at Enda Kenny’s latest public support for the Finucane family’s call for an independent public inquiry.

The Fermanagh & South Tyrone MLA said:

“One month ago when in Washington DC I described comments made by Enda Kenny as unwarranted and unhelpful.

Tonight in a speech at Queens University in Belfast, Enda Kenny repeated the mistake as he once again took the opportunity to express support for the Finucane family in their demands for a “full public Inquiry.”

Mr Elliott continued “Once again I have to ask why Enda Kenny chose to single out the Finucane family, while thousands of families in Northern Ireland and beyond suffered losses during the thirty year terror campaign?

This is particularly galling bearing in mind the difficulty which both I and Danny Kennedy have had in getting Mr Kenny to make good on a commitment he made to meet with us to discuss the Kingsmills massacre and other atrocities.

To listen to some people you would almost think that the Finucanes were the only family to have a loved one brutally murdered by terrorists or that they should be at the apex of some kind of hierarchy of victims.

This is totally unacceptable. Once again I am calling on Edna Kenny to meet with myself and Danny Kennedy to discuss the many murders which took place in border areas, and in which the terrorists either came from or fled to sanctuary in the Republic.

I am sure Mr Kenny would not want to leave the people of Belfast and Northern Ireland with the impression that he values the victims of loyalist terrorism as more worthy of his time and attention than the victims of republican violence.”
